Research into workplace learning of current and future academic general practitioners

As part of the general practice training program in Utrecht, we conduct research into education and learning. Our research focuses on the workplace of current and future professionals. How can these professionals learn to apply, together with other professionals, recent evidence from medical research to improve the clinical practice?

Workplace learning is essential in medical training: because you learn most in practice and because learning does not stop after completing the study program. Our study is about people who learn from and with each other; during internships, in the workplace during further education, and during lifelong learning. We not only look at learning between people with the same educational program, but particularly also at interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning. And at learning by physicians in their contact with patients. In our studies, we use social learning theories, such as interprofessional learning, informal learning and workplace learning. We investigate how learning takes place, why that happens and how education can be designed to improve learning.

Professor Dr Roger Damoiseaux, head of the Utrecht General Practice Training Institute, holds the chair Education and Evidence Based Medicine in General Practice. In 2014, he held his inaugural lecture "From Boerhaave to Academic general practitioner".
