PUMP-fit studie
Aging vital and fit
Aging is associated with a decrease in muscle strength and muscle mass. Prevention of this decrease is therefore very important to stay fit and vital for as long as possible. An exercise and nutrition intervention is an effective way to work on a vital life and contributes to improving the self-reliance of the elderly.
In practice, there are a number of local initiatives to keep the elderly fit and vital for as long as possible. However, few people over 65 participate in an organized exercise program.

The PUMP-fit study started in January 2021. This study is a collaboration between UMC Utrecht and Wageningen University within the Regiondeal Foodvalley. The aim of this collaboration is to maintain the fitness and functionality of the elderly by effectively combining nutrition and exercise. Over the next four years, researchers will work on the implementation of an effective nutrition and exercise program in the Foodvalley region, which includes Barneveld, Ede, Nijkerk, Rhenen, Renswoude, Scherpenzeel, Veenendaal en Wageningen.
The PUMP-fit study will investigate how an exercise and nutrition intervention can best be rolled out in practice. The ultimate goal of the study is to put the exercise program into practice successfully and sustainably within the region. We are curious about the reasons why people do or do not participate in an exercise and nutrition intervention, and which factors play a role in the roll-out of such a program.

We are looking for physiotherapists, dieticians and people over 65 living at home who would like to talk to us about setting up an exercise and nutrition intervention. And possibly also be interested in participating in the implementation study. Physiotherapy and dietetic practices are thus given the opportunity to have a say in the design of an exercise and nutrition intervention.
It also offers the opportunity to be one of the first providers of this new intervention. A nice network can also be created of healthcare professionals in the region. People over 65 living at home can work on their vitality under the guidance of professionals by participating in the intervention. The results of the study contribute to overall health care by keeping our elderly fit and vital for as long as possible.
