Assessment and appraisal

National protocol and test plan

The eight general practice training institutes have an Appraisal and Assessment Protocol. This is part of the National Education Plan and describes the formal regulation the general practice training program must meet in terms of assessment and appraisal.  The contents of the protocol are set out in the National Test Plan.

All national documents (in Dutch) can be found on the website www.huisartsopleiding.nl under Education > Assessment.

Local test plan

The Utrecht General Practice Training Institute has specified the national test plan in a local test plan. This describes all tests during the program. It also provides an overview of all appraisal moments during the program.

As a postgraduate student, you will remain subject to the protocol and test plan that applies at the start of the program. All previous test plans are available in the Electronic Learning Environment (ELE).

Competency development

Assessment of a postgraduate student's progress during the program is based on competencies. The competency profile serves as reference point. The training themes' and the Typical Professional Activities' of the national education plan for General Practice Training provide direction for competency development of the postgraduate students.

What are competencies?

A competency is the integrated application of knowledge, skills, attitudes, characteristics and insights during professional functioning. For general practitioners, these are set out in the competency profile for general practitioners.

Competencies have multiple dimensions, such as content (= what has been learned), context (= where is it applied) and steering mechanism (including reflective skills). This means that a specific competency can be relied on in a virtually limitless number of practical situations. Reflection on these situations enables transfer of previous experiences to new situations.

General practitioner competency profile

The competency profile for general practitioners was revised in 2016. This profile indicates what competencies Dutch general practitioners must have to provide primary care as determined by the professional group. The general practice core values are the starting point. The competency profile, including the vision documents on which it is based, can be found on the website of the General Practice Training Institute www.huisartsopleiding.nl
